The library subscribes to numerous online databases, electronic books, electronic journals and full-text articles, many of which may be linked within your Blackboard course or on class pages that you may be maintaining on personal or department web servers. This informational page provides specific instructions on linking to these.

Please note that not all of our subscription materials have persistent URLs (also known as PURLs) that allow direct linking. If the library material you wish to include in your course page is not listed on this page, contact libweb@umw.edu for assistance, as it may be possible to create a dynamic search link that will retrieve the item.

The library uses a proxy server to authenticate valid UMW users located off-campus by requiring entry of a username and password. It is set up so that on-campus users bypass this process and go directly into the resource, although all users are given the same links. When creating the links using the steps on this page, you should always use a computer connected to the campus network either physically located on campus or via direct campus dialup rather than through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as AOL or Verizon because proxied links are sometimes rewritten. ALL LINKS TO ACCESS LIBRARY SUBSCRIPTION MATERIALS MUST BEGIN WITH THE FOLLOWING:

http://ezproxy.umw.edu:2048/login?url=

If you or your students have difficulty connecting from off-campus, review our page About Off-Campus Access to Resources for tips.

InfoTrac/Gale Group Databases
(Expanded Academic ASAP, Business and Company Resource Center, Health and Wellness Resource Center, Computer Database, General Reference Center Gold, InfoTrac OneFile, Literature Resource Center, Contemporary Authors)

Please note that the full-text in these InfoTrac/Gale Group databases changes according to publisher contracts and some articles may be removed from the database at a future date. Others have "rolling" backfiles (i.e. current 5 years) and older materials will be removed at the beginning of each calendar year.

  1. Connect using the link above or a direct link to the database from another page on the Library's website. Perform a search to locate the article. Click on the "text" or "text with graphics" link in the citation to display the article on the screen (please note: the pdf versions may NOT be linked to directly; however, they can be accessed from the bottom of the initial text display screen).
  2. Any screen that contains an "InfoMark" symbol, which is a yellow "i" inside a blue circle, may be linked. This can be a page of search results, a text display screen or a "browser print" display. Not all full-text articles will include this symbol.
  3. View the article in either format; you can link to either the html or pdf version of the article.
  4. Copy the article URL address from Internet Explorer's Address bar and paste it into your document. Place the proxy prefix <http://ezproxy.umw.edu:2048/login?url=> in front of the article URL.

NetLibrary

The library has purchased approximately 27,000 electronic books through NetLibrary in a shared access plan. This means that books may be checked out by individuals in several other colleges and universities as well as UMW, so books may not be reasonable accessible for use by large numbers of students within a short period of time. The checkout period is 2 hours, and there is no means for an individual to reserve a book, to place a hold upon it or to be notified of its availability if it is checked out.

  1. Locate the record for the book in the library catalog. All NetLibrary books have a call number "NetLibrary." Copy the link in the section labeled "Multimedia."
  2. Paste this URL into your document. DO NOT ADD THE PROXY URL TO NETLIBRARY BOOK LINKS. Instead, just include a link near the URL for students to use to create a NetLibrary account. Here is an example of instructions that you may copy and use as is or modify:

To check out the book, login to your NetLibrary account when prompted. If you do not have an account, click on this link http://ezproxy.umw.edu:2048/login?url=http://www.netlibrary.com, choose "create an account," from the NetLibrary screen and follow the instructions. Please note that the library has no access to individual account information, and it is recommended that you read the "Privacy Policy." After creating your account, you may check out the book.
