Simpson Library holdings include over 355,000 volumes; approximately 2,500 current print and electronic periodical subscriptions; more than 550,000 microforms; about 1600 maps; over 100 electronic databases, many of which provide access to full-text articles in 21,000 publications; and 20,000 electronic books.
General Collection
The general collection is arranged in Library of Congress call number order
on the Library's three floors as follows:

These items may be checked out by persons with a valid UMW I.D. at the circulation desk located on the first floor.
Newly received books are placed in a designated area on the first floor of the Library.
Reference Collection
The reference collection and information desk are located on the Library's first
floor. Over 100 databases and indexes are available on several computers with
Internet access. Items in the reference collection do not circulate.
Periodicals Collection
Current magazines and newspapers are shelved on the first floor and may not
be checked out. Older issues are retained on microfilm, microfiche, or in bound
volumes.
Special Collections
Both the University Archives and the Rare Book Room Collections are housed
in Room 217. Items may be used in that room only. Special Collections is
open
Tuesdays
and Wednesdays 2 PM - 4:30 PM and by appointment at (540) 654-1752. During
the
summer, Special Collections is open by appointment only. Please call in advance,
so we can pull materials ahead for your research topic and to confirm your
appointment
time.
Government Documents Collection
The Simpson Library is a partial federal depository, receiving approximately
25% of the items distributed by the Government Printing Office. The Library
is a partial state depository receiving numerous documents from the Commonwealth
of Virginia . Public access to these materials is guaranteed.
