If you are having trouble finding results online or in the catalog for your search term, try to think of another way of describing or saying the term. For example, if a search for "car" yields no results, try searching for "automobile" or "auto". You can also try narrowing your search by selecting a more specific term (for "car", try "truck", "van", "limousine") or broadening your search by selecting a more general term (for "car", try "vehicle" or "transportation").
You can also determine the correct subject heading (the specific words used by libraries to describe a subject or topic) for your search term by using the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). LCSH is searchable online and can be useful not only to establish the correct subject heading, but also to suggest alternate terminology, variant spellings and related terms.
Ask a Librarian or see Doing Research in the Sciences.
