United States Copyright Office
This is the official U.S. copyright site. Look here for current copyright law and pending legislation, good basic explanations of copyright, forms and documents for registering copyright, a list of copyright licensing organizations & publications rights clearinghouses for print and non-print materials, international copyright information and more.

Copyrights (formerly "Copyright Basics")
This is a web-based legal encyclopedia entry from NOLO, a self-help legal publisher. See also the related articles listed at the end of the entry.

Copyright: Issues and Concerns for the Academic Community
More of an annotated collection of links than a discussion of academic "issues and concerns."
Includes a brief copyright overview and a link to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Copyright Society of the USA
This non-profit organization states its mission as "the gathering, dissemination and interchange of information concerning protection and use of rights in intellectual property."

The Copyright Website
This site includes overview materials on copyright. Of particular interest are the examples of prominent copyright infringement cases with explanations of the decisions. The site's author is an attorney specializing in intellectual property.

Cyberfables
From the ASJA (American Society of Journalists and Authors), this site is geared towards authors' rights.

FindLaw's Copyright Law Web Guide
Located on their Intellectual Property page, this section has links to internet resources on copyright from FindLaw, a directory of internet legal resources.

Friends of Active Copyright Education (FACE)
This organization's website provides excellent explanations of copyright for non-lawyers and explodes common myths and misinformation about copyright.

Law About...Copyright
Part of Cornell Law School's Legal Information Institute, this site contains copyright laws and regulations as well as current court decisions.

The page author debunks common misconceptions concerning the Internet and copyright. Please note: this page is somewhat dated and is not reviewed on an ongoing basis to reflect changes in copyright law.

Copyright Term and the Public Domain in the United States
This chart includes a clear explanation of the duration of copyrights based on whether it was published or unpublished as well as when, and also includes information on works originally published outside the U.S.

When Works Pass into the Public Domain
This chart clearly explains when materials are no longer protected under copyright, based on their date of creation or publication and upon the copyright law in effect at that time.

Copyright and Fair Use - Stanford University Libraries
This excellent site includes information on copyright and fair use as well as links to many opinion and interpretation documents.

Copyright Bay
This copyright tutorial is geared towards educational users. It's entertaining and informative, but please note that it was not written by lawyers.

Copyright Crash Course
An excellent overview and tutorial specifically created for educational users by the University of Texas System Office of General Counsel.
Especially notable is the "Four Factor Fair Use Test," which can be applied to assist in determining whether Fair Use will apply in a given context, and Copyright and the University Community: Implementing a Comprehensive Copyright Policy.

Copyright Policy of Carnegie Mellon University
Although dated, the Policy's "Examples of Fair Use Practice" are informative for educators. See also: Princeton University's Blackboard FAQ

Copyright Resources on the Internet
Part of the Groton, Connecticut Public Schools' Copyright Implementation Manual, this site "directs copyright users to the wealth of copyright and fair use information on the Internet."
Subjects addressed include "The Fair Use Guidelines," "Obtaining Permission and Licensing," and Copyright Resources: Higher Education."

The National Association of College Stores, Inc.
The National Association of College Stores, a trade association that serves the college and university retailing industry, provides excellent information geared towards the academic community.

Obtaining Permission (Copyright Clearance) for Use of Material

Copyright Clearance Center
This clearinghouse "provides licensing for the reproduction and distribution of copyrighted materials in print and electronic formats." If a work is not currently listed in the clearinghouse database, CCC staff will work with you to negotiate rights for use.
The Academic Permissions Service, Electronic Course Content Service, and Republication Licensing Service are the services directed towards academic users. Please note that there are normally fees associated with acquiring usage rights.

WATCH File (Writers, Artisits and Their Copyright Holders)
This is a searchable database with contact information for many writers, artists and their copyright holders (i.e. heirs to the individual's estate, organizations to whom the work's creator gave copyright, etc.). Also see the Locating U.S. Copyright Holders page, which has specific sources to use and steps to take when trying to locate copyright holders.
