Steps |
| Saving the text of a Web page
*Remember to cite the Web page properly if you're incorporating it
into your own work
|
In Netscape:
- Click on File.
- Choose Save As.
- Choose drive and folder in which to place the Web page.
- Select Plain Text (*.txt) from the pulldown menu
- Click on Save.
In IE:
- Click on File.
- Choose Save As.
- Choose drive and folder in which to place the Web page.
- Select Text File (*.txt) from the pulldown menu.
- Click Save.

Saving a portion of a Web page
*Remember to cite the page properly
|
- Highlight the portion of the Web page you want by holding down the
left mouse button and dragging the cursor down the screen.
- Choose Edit, then Copy.
- Open word processing file or Notepad, which is located under Accessories
in Windows 95/98.
- Choose Edit, then Paste.
- The portion of the Web page you highlighted will be placed in the
document.

| Printing a Web page
|
- Click on File in menu bar.
- Choose Print.
- Click OK on print menu.

| Printing parts of a Web page
|
In Netscape:
- Click on File in menu bar.
- Select Print Preview.
- Click on Next Page until you find the page you want to print.
- Click on Print.
- Select the page number(s) you want printed.
- When you are finished, click on Close.
In IE:
- Highlight the portion of the Web page you want to print by holding
down the left mouse button and dragging the cursor down the screen.
- Click on File in the menu bar.
- Select Print.
- In the box labeled print range, choose the selection option.
- Click OK.

| emailing a Web page (emailing a Web page means sending only the text
on the page or sending the source)

In Netscape:
- Click on File in the menu bar.
- Select Send Page. (If the page you're trying to send is a
frame, you'll select Send Frame.
- Type the email address of the person you are sending the message
to in the line next to To.
- To send the Web page text in the body of the email message, click
Quote. The Web page is automatically made an attachment.
- Click on Send.
In IE:
- Click on File in the menu bar.
- Select Send.
- You can choose Page by email or Link by email.
- Type the email address of the person you are sending the message
to in the line next to To.
- Click on Send.

| Printing a page that is wider than 8 1/2"
|
- Click on File in the menu bar.
- Select Print.
- Click on Properties in the print menu.
- Choose landscape.
- Click OK.

| Print pages with dark backgrounds
|
In Netscape:
- Click on Edit in the menu bar.
- Select Preferences from the menu.
- Click on Colors in the menu of categories. (It's a subcategory
of Appearance.)
- Select a background color. Since you want to be able to print, white
would be a good choice.
- Select a text color. You might want to choose black.
- Check the box next to Always use my colors, overriding document.
- Click OK.
- Proceed with printing the Web page.
In IE:
- Click on Tools in the menu bar.
- Select Internet Options from the menu.
- Click on Colors.
- Deselect Use Windows Colors by clicking the radio button
next to it.
- Select the background color you want; usually white is a good choice.
- Click OK

| Saving a frame
|
In Netscape:
- Click with the right mouse button on the frame you want to save.
- Click on File.
- Choose Save Frame As.
- Select Plain Text (*.txt) from the pulldown menu next to
save as type.
- Create a new file name if you want.
- Click on Save.
In IE:
- Click on the frame you want to save.
- Click on File.
- Choose Save as.
- Select Text File (*txt) from the pulldown menu.
- Create a new file name if you want.
- Click on Save.

- Click on the frame you want to print.
- Click on File in the menu bar.
- Choose Print Frame.
- Click OK on the print menu.

In Netscape:
- Right-click on the image.
- Choose Save As from the pop-up menu.
- Click on Save to save the image in the drive and folder listed,
or use the other buttons next to the folder names to select another
drive and folder.
In IE:
- Right-click on the image.
- Choose Save Picture As from the pop-up menu.
- Click on Save to save the image in the drive and folder listed,
or use the other buttons next to the folder names to select another
drive and folder.

| Inserting images into MS documents (Word documents, Web pages, or PowerPoint presentations)
|
- Open the document in which you want the have the image inserted.
- Make sure your cursor is located where you want the image to be
located.
- Click on Insert in the menu bar.
- Choose Picture.
- Choose From File.
- Locate the drive and folder name that holds the image. (If the image
is on a diskette, load it in the A: drive.)
- After locating the image file, highlight it and click on Insert.

| Downloading statistical tables into spreadsheets
|
- If the table is already in worksheet format, you'll need to either
follow the directions from the Web page, or click on File and
select Save As.
- Choose a folder in which to place the file. You can choose Excel
is you'd like.
- Open Microsoft's Excel program by clicking on Start and choosing
Programs. Choose Microsoft Excel from the menu.
- When Excel is open, click on File and choose Open from
the menu.
- Choose All Files from the pulldown menu next to Files
of type.
- Click on the file you downloaded. If the file is delimited or in
fixed-width format, you'll have to indicate which format. If it is
delimited, you'll need to determine which delimiter the file uses:
commas, tabs, semicolons, or some other delimiter. Click on Next,
until the spreadsheet is ready to load. If the file is already in
a spreadsheet format, it will automatically load into the spreadsheet.

- Highlight the table by holding down the left mouse button and dragging
the cursor down the screen until the table is highlighted.
- Choose Edit, then Copy.
- Open word processing file or Notepad, which is located under Accessories
in Windows 95.
- Choose Edit, then Paste.
- If the tabular configuration is distorted, change the font to Courier
or some other non-proportional font.
OR
- If the table is entire Web page, click on File, choose Save As,
and place the file in a folder.
- Select Plain Text (*.txt) in Netscape or Text File
(*txt) if you're using Internet Explorer, from the pulldown menu
and name it something new.
- Click on Save.
- Open word processing file or Notepad, open the saved text file,
and save it using the menu provided.
- If the tabular configuration is distorted, change the font to Courier
or some other non-proportional font.
