Freeman File (late 1920s to October 1985; AI 21 .R52 F73)
The Freeman File is an index on microfiche to articles in the Richmond Times-Dispatch (AN 2 .R52 T55) and the Richmond News Leader.
It consists of 150,000 note cards arranged by subject headings. In addition to the main file, there is a special index to articles covering World War II.

LexisNexis Academic    (mostly 1990s to date, though coverage varies)
LexisNexis Academic indexes hundreds of newspapers and news sources around the world. It offers full-text coverage for news, business, legal and medical information.

The New York Times Index covers the period 1851 to the present and is the most widely used newspaper index in the United States. It provides references to dates, pages, and columns of articles in The New York Times newspaper and includes numerous cross references to names and related topics. Under each topic, abstracts (brief summaries) of each article are arranged in chronological order, and these answer many questions without the need to refer to the paper itself. By giving dates for events of nationwide and worldwide significance, the Index allows researchers access to the same topics in local newspapers.

News Index furnishes full-text, current articles from more than 300 international newspapers and news sources.

Also called the London Times Index, this alphabetical index now covers The Times, The Sunday Times, The Times Literary Supplement, The Times Educational Supplement, and The Times Higher Education Supplement.

Newspaper Archives

  Many newspapers allow users to search their back issues on the Web, usually by keyword, phrase, or name (years of indexing coverage varies from paper to paper). Some newspapers permit researchers to obtain the last two or three weeks' worth of articles at no cost, while others charge for every story, no matter how recent. Although users can usually browse and obtain article citations at no cost, most papers charge for each article that is displayed, printed, or downloaded. Each newspaper has its own search engine, so be sure to read the help screens to learn the correct syntax.

Coverage varies from title to title in this information archival service of several dozen newspapers in the Knight-Rider chain. Each citation includes the first few sentences of the article.

International News Archive on the Web
Provides access to non-U.S. newspaper archives. Papers are arranged geographically by region and country.

U. S. News Archives on the Web
Links to dozens of U.S. newspaper archives are arranged alphabetically by state. Included are the dates of each archive and the cost to retrieve the full text of each article.

Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star
The online edition of Fredericksburg's daily newspaper includes full-text articles, wire reports, a calendar of events, and other features. One years' worth of stories are available from its archives.

Fredericksburg Research Sources
These resources compiled by the Historic Preservation Department at the University of Mary Washington enable users to search such area resources as nineteenth-century Fredericksburg directories, historic district codes, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century newspaper indexes, and local Mutual Assurance Policies and Censuses of Manufacturing Lists.
