Interpreting Library of Congress Call Numbers

All of the materials in the Library, except current periodicals, are arranged on the shelves according to the Library of Congress (LC) classification system. Most college and university libraries use the Library of Congress system to catalog and classify their books.

VIEW AN OUTLINE OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM HERE

Each part of an LC call number has meaning. The call number is unique to a single work in the collection. Here is the LC call number assigned to the book Why We Were in Vietnam, by Norman Podhoretz:

D stands for History
DS = Asian History
558= Vietnam (this is a whole number)
P= author's last name starts with P
63=subdivision for author's name (this is a decimal)
1982=year of publication
