TALON MODULE 5: Using the Library Catalog
Other Library Catalogs and Book Databases

What if the Library does not have the book you need, or what if you want to find other books that exist on your topic that are not in the Library?

Many libraries have their catalogs available on the Internet. If you would like to search another library's catalog, most of the same things you can do in our catalog will be similar, although the software will be different. Use one of these lists of Internet-accessible libraries:

Lib-web-cats
LibDex: The Library Index
Libweb: Library Servers via the WWW
PublicLibraries.com
School Libraries on the Web
Virginia Libraries

To search across the collections of many libraries, you can use WorldCat, a "union" catalog. This is a collective database of over 36 million items from the collections of most of the academic and large public libraries in the U.S., as well as several libraries in other countries. The Library of Congress, the largest library collection in the U.S., is also online.

A source for locating information about books is Books in Print, a database of books currently available from publishers. Although this database is designed primarily for people wishing to purchase books, you can locate information on books here and then search for them in a library catalog.
