TALON MODULE 5: Using the Library Catalog
Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)
Here is an example of a subject heading
entry in the Library of Congress Subject Headings book.
Headings listed in bold print indicate that these are proper headings and
may used in a subject search. Entries not in bold print are cross-references
that guide you to the correct subject heading.
UF (Used For) tells you to use this subject
heading for the items listed under UF. If you look up the UF terms, they usually
give a cross-reference back to this heading.
The additional codes BT, RT and NT list other correct subject headings that
may be used for your topic. These can guide you to a better subject heading.
BT (Broader Term) lists concepts that
are more encompassing than this heading.
RT (Related Term) lists concepts that
are similar but don't mean quite the same thing.
NT (Narrower Term) lists concepts that
are more specific than this heading.
Subdivisions, preceded by dashes, also help
to narrow your search to a more specific aspect of the topic.
