TALON MODULE 5: Using the Library Catalog
Keyword Searching

Remember, keyword searches look for words or phrases located anywhere, and you can search more than one word or phrase at a time. You can apply many of the special search techniques from the module on Performing Effective Searches in Electronic Databases.

In the Library's catalog, you can limit the keyword to a particular field (author, title, subject, ISSN, ISBN, LCCN) or you can choose all fields. The catalog supports the use of the Boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT.

Let's look at an example of a keyword search in any field. Our search term is endangered species .

Example:

KEYWORD SEARCH IN ALL FIELDS - four slides

Let's look at keyword search examples using AND, OR, and NOT:

AND endangered species AND Virginia - four slides

OR endangered species OR endangered animals OR threatened species - two slides

NOT endangered species NOT Virginia - two slides
