Types of Databases

As print (that is, paper) periodical indexes are replaced by online databases, abstracts are becoming more and more a common feature. While researching in the Library, you will probably come across several types of databases. These include:

Type of Database Characteristics of Each Record Sample Titles
Bibliographic Includes citation and usually subject headings (also called descriptors) Periodicals Index Online
Abstract Includes citation, subject headings, and a summary of the article’s content Cambridge Scientific Abstracts
Full-Text Includes complete text of article LexisNexis Academic,
Factiva
Hybrid Includes a combination of database types; that is, some records may be bibliographic, some may contain abstracts, and some may be full-text Expanded Academic ASAP,
