Drawbacks of Subject Searching

As noted previously, the advantage of subject searching is that it offers a high degree of relevancy and precision. That is, the correct heading will usually locate material (if it’s available) on the topic you are researching.

But here are some other things to think about:

What if you do not know the correct subject heading and no thesaurus is available?

Perhaps your topic is so narrow and specific no heading exists, but you have an idea the terms you have in mind might be mentioned in an article abstract. Similarly, your topic may be so new no subject terms are yet available on it.

What if you saw a useful article weeks ago, but you only remember a few words of its title?

Maybe your subject has multiple concepts and is therefore hard to pin down to one subject heading.
