TALON MODULE 6: Finding Periodical Articles
Keyword Searching in Action
Here is an actual search that illustrates the usefulness of keyword searching.
A student told a reference librarian that he once read that in the late 1860s
several Americans painted pictures of the room in which Abraham Lincoln had
died, but the artists all inaccurately represented the number of people present.
How, he asked, could he verify this?
America: History and Life focuses on journal articles in United
States history, so that database was the immediate choice.
A check in the browsable subject heading index under "Lincoln, Abraham" turned
up hundreds of articles on the President. How could the topic be narrowed?
A glance in the "help" guide found that a keyword search permitted
a free-text search of terms in the author, abstract, title, subject heading,
author, and document type fields. The keywords "artists" and "room"
(in addition to the subject heading "Lincoln, Abraham") easily located
the right-on-target article titled, "Lincoln’s Rubber Room," which
appeared in a 1998 issue of American History. The abstract of the article
included all three of the search words.
