TALON MODULE 6: Finding Periodical Articles
Does the Library Have the Periodical I Need?
Once you have found references to articles, you need to determine if the Library
owns the periodicals, especially the particular issues you want.
Important: When looking for titles of
periodicals in the catalog, be sure to search under the title
of the magazine or journal, not the article within the publication.
For example, if you are looking for John T. Trowbridge's "The Field
of Gettysburg" in Atlantic Monthly, you would search under Atlantic
Monthly, not "Field of Gettysburg."
The catalog tells you how periodicals are kept in Simpson Library. Current
issues of magazines and journals are arranged in alphabetical order on the periodical
shelves (first floor, behind the center staircase). Older issues
are kept on microfilm, microfiche,
or are bound like a book and placed
in the
stacks. All of the periodicals in the Stafford
Library are kept in alphabetical order. The Library also has many electronic
journals, periodicals that are published online. Electronic journals
are listed in the Library's catalog with the call number "Internet"
and a link to the journal. Additionally, millions of articles from thousands
of journal titles can be found in the full-text databases. These can be located
using the Journal
Finder.
Check out our Finding
Periodical Articles page for more information
on finding specific magazine and journal articles.
