TALON MODULE 6: Finding Periodical Articles
Scholarly vs. Popular

There are other clues that can help you see the difference between a popular magazine and a scholarly journal. Although there are no hard and fast rules, sometimes the title itself is a hint. Many journal titles even sound scholarly, with words such as journal, studies, review, bulletin, annals, or quarterly appearing in them. For example, a few journals that the Library subscribes to are the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, International Studies Quarterly, the Bulletin of Marine Science, Hispanic Review, and American Indian Culture and Research Journal.

Not surprisingly, article titles in magazines are usually much more informal and "breezy" in nature than titles of journal articles, which are usually more technical.
