TALON MODULE 4: Performing Effective Searches in Electronic Databases
Limits and Filters

Limits and filters allow you to restrict the results of a particular search or to set conditions on the results of a search. In general, a limit is placed on a particular search after you have performed it, while a filter is set in the database and will apply to all future searches that you do.

The types of limits and filters vary in each database, but they often include such things as materials published in a particular time period, language or place; items located in a specific area of the library; publications containing a certain type of contents (i.e. book review, journal article, book chapter, etc.); or some other characteristic appropriate to the database.

Usually, limits and filters are accessed through a button or a menu option on the screen.

Important: Always check the database "help" screens for information on the available limits and filters.
