Topic Selection

The first step in research is selecting a topic. The topic you choose may be:

  1. assigned by your instructor.
  2. a subject that interests you.
  3. a real information need that you have.
  4. something discussed in class about which you want to know more.

These topic suggestions are very broad, so you will need to think about focusing on a specific aspect of the topic you choose. Here are some examples:

information about efforts to preserve coastal wetlands

Subject Area:
Shakespeare's plays

Aspect to focus on:
female characters

More specific topic:
the portrayal of women in William Shakespeare's comedies The Merry Wives of Windsor and The Taming of the Shrew

Subject Area:
school violence

Aspect to focus on:
high school shootings

More specific topic:
an examination of recent high school shootings and the social alienation of teens
