TALON MODULE 2: Topic Development and Source Selection
Types of Materials

There are four main types of materials in which to locate information:

Books
Books are good sources for providing a thorough treatment of a topic.

Reference materials
Reference materials are good to use when you need an overview of or an introduction to a topic or if you need additional information such as definitions or statistics.

Periodicals
Periodical articles are the best choice for recent information or very new topics.

Websites
Websites can also be good places to go for current or new information.

Other types of sources include audiovisuals (videos, films, sound recordings), graphics (slides, photographs, maps), government documents , and archival materials (manuscripts, letters, diaries and journals, etc.).
