TALON MODULE 2: Topic Development and Source Selection
Identification of Important Concepts
It is important to state your topic as precisely as possible so that you can
identify the important concepts that are
part of the topic.
Look at all of the words and select the critical terms that are needed.
Tip: These are usually nouns (with any descriptive
words attached to them) but may also be verbs.
Let's look at the important concepts in these three topics:
1. information about efforts to preserve coastal wetlands
2. the portrayal of women in William Shakespeare's
comedies
The Merry Wives of Windsor and The Taming of the Shrew
3. an examination of recent high school shootings
and the social alienation of teens
